Valley is last, best hope for citrus industry

TULARE COUNTY – If you like oranges, lemons and limes and are skeptical of genetically modified food then the Central Valley is your last and best hope for the future. That was the overarching message of scientists working to prevent the spread of the fatal citrus tree diseas Huanglongbing (HLB) at the annual Citrus Conference in Visalia on Oct. 11.

Hundreds of growers from around the state attended the conference put on by the Citrus Research Board, a Visalia-based grower-funded scientific organization that funds research to cure diseases and control pests that threaten California and Arizona’s multi-billion citrus industry.
