MADERA – For 31-year-old Juan Torres, being committed to addressing the lack of medical needs among Latinos is one of his main goals as a doctor.

Torres, who was born and raised in San Diego, is one of the 13 residents in the inaugural class of Valley Children’s Residency Program, affiliated with Stanford University of Medicine.

Ten of the residents are from California or have deep roots to the region. Four grew up in the Central Valley. Others are graduates of Fresno State University and UC Merced.

“Valley Children’s has been training pediatricians for 40 years,” said Dr. David Christensen, medical affairs and chief physician executive. “But today is truly a historical moment for this organization.”
